Seventh LockMart GPS Satellite Launched From Cape Canaveral


An upgraded satellite Global Positioning System Block IIR (GPS IIR-M) equipped with an innovative payload that will provide in-orbit demonstration of a third civil signal, has been successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, the Air Force station in Florida.
Designated GPS IIR-20 (M), the satellite is the seventh in a series of eight GPS IIR satellites that Lockheed Martin Navigation Systems in Newtown, Pennsylvania, has modernized for its customers.
The modernization of the GPS IIR satellites includes several features that enhance operations and navigation signal performance for military and civilian GPS users around the world.
Each IIR-M satellite includes a modernization of the antenna panel that provides increased signal power to receivers on land, two new military signals for improved accuracy, enhanced encryption and anti-blocking capability military, civil and a second signal that offer users an open access signal on a different frequency.
