BMW Vision EfficientDynamics (Photos from concept inside)

Weeks of speculation and rumors end today with a bang on the table. BMW has just provided all the details of its Vision EfficientDynamics, a prototype that will be exhibited from 15 September at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a sign of the technological advances developed in-white propeller. Which are not few.
Confirming the advances of the last days (including what we thought seeing the first official teaser), the Vision EfficientDynamics uses a plug-in hybrid system with a high efficiency heat engine and two electric whose batteries can be recharged from a plug to get performance comparable to a BMW M3 (250 km / h limited and 0 to 100 in 4.8 seconds), but with so extraordinarily content consumption as the 3.76 L/100 km in combined cycle that would harmonize.
This new concept is also the flagship of the new three-cylinder BMW mechanics. Your internal combustion engine, a 1.5-liter block is essentially half the 3.0 L seen in the 335d, you can extract 163 horsepower and 290 Nm in association with a gearshift DCT, derived from models that already include M3 and Z4 production. Is your main engine, but as we say, is supported by two auxiliary power contribute to achieving 356 hp and a torque of 800 Nm at peak performance.
The first of these engines is derived from that used in the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and provides 25 kW continuous (upgradeable to 38) from its position between the central span and the gearbox. The maximum force of 290 Nm is developed either to support the heart of the concept diesel or all-electric mode. Besides providing energy, is also able to capture through regenerative braking system.
The second engine is in the front and possibly the most interesting of all. Has been designed for maximum sportsmanship, developing 60 kW and up to 220 Nm. If you hit the accelerator hard, for 30 seconds can make additional 84 kW, and may even get 104 kW in a 10-second stomp, which obviously leads to an explosive acceleration.
Obviously, as important as the engines are the batteries used. BMW has opted for the lithium polymer technology, and similar to the Volt, has arranged them along the vehicle's center tunnel, so that the weight distribution is perfectly optimized (important, given that weigh 85 kg). They have a usable capacity of 8.6 kWh on a total of 10.8 kWh, and can be recharged in 2.5 hours from a simple plug 220 V/16 A.

As you've read our description of course, BMW does not consider the Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid to go from home to work and from work to home.

Although it can run on 100% electric mode, its purpose is to provide an unrivaled sportsmanship within its segment, to which BMW has optimized electric motors from a purely sport. Sure, that's not all. Your internal combustion engine is located right in front of the rear axle, and the whole structure of the vehicle has been made with materials of low weight aluminum for the chassis and suspension, body panels and polycarbonate windows. All these details help to give a weight of 1,395 kg vehicle contained in a 4.60 meters long, 1.90 meters wide and 1.24 meters high.

With that said, BMW has focused on the sport does not mean that consumption will remain in the background. Its range exclusively for the Activated diesel engine is 640 km, and that number can make the 50 contributed by its battery pack.

In addition to careful aerodynamics, the secret of their autonomy should be to the same position in the optimization of consumption, to which BMW has developed an intelligent system that anticipates savings to the road to reduce electricity consumption. For example, if the radar cruise control detects a decrease in traffic speed can turn off the engine and prepare the regenerative braking system, an idea that surely we will see in BMW's future sooner rather than later.

Interested? Then do not miss our live coverage from the Frankfurt Motor Show. This year will be spectacular.
